intro to natural dyes: dyes derived from plants
Natural dyeing is an intricate and rewarding process of extracting vibrant color from various plant materials such as leaves, bark, roots, and flowers. This creative endeavor can often lead to unpredictable results, yet provides a sense of tranquility. Participants will gain an understanding of the four natural dyes they can use to create up to twelve different shades on the fabric or yarn of their choice. Each student taking the class must bring at least 1/2 yard of fabric of different blends for the creation of a color swatch library.
This workshop explores topics such as color extraction techniques, types of natural dyes and WOF examples, color modification, exhaust baths, over-dyeing, and washing and care for naturally dyed textiles.
Students are required to bring their own fabric/fiber/yarn, which must be 100% natural (e.g. cotton, silk, hemp, linen, bamboo, tencel, wool). Blends with 5% or more of synthetic such as Lycra are not recommended. For any questions or concerns, please contact us.
