intro to natural dyes: preparation, pH and water types
Understanding how to properly prepare your fiber and/or fabric for even dyeing is the most important step in natural dyeing. You'll be able to learn the best practices in natural dyeing so you can achieve beautiful, vibrant and lasting results. This workshop provides students with experience in the preparation of materials for even dye results, as well as instruction on the importance of pH and water types in the dyeing process. At the conclusion of this workshop, students will have pre-treated their materials at their individual workstations and will have the knowledge to begin exploring the world of mordanting. This workshop will cover fabric and yarn preparation, water types, pH scale, and WOF, with examples and a worksheet.
Students are required to bring their own fabric/fiber/yarn, which must be 100% natural (e.g. cotton, silk, hemp, linen, bamboo, tencel, wool). Blends with 5% or more of synthetic such as Lycra are not recommended. For any questions or concerns, please contact us.
