Hi friends,
Today I wanted to share one of my favorite spots in the area to find affordable crafting supplies. The Resource Exchange (located at 1800 American St, Philadelphia, PA 19122), is a reclaimed material consignment shop and gallery space. They operate under four main principles: donate, shop, create and impact. By buying your supplies and homewares there you are saving materials from ending up in a landfill and extend their lifespan. Similar can be said for donating your unwanted items instead of throwing them in the trash.
They highlight local artists with rotating exhibitions and workshops throughout the year. I’ve noticed that featured jewelers and other makers have had work for sale during their time exhibiting. It’s a great resource for those in search of a cute handmade gift! Browsing the “shop” tab on their website can give you an idea of what items they have in stock and buy online 24/7. However, it really is worth making a trip in person with an open mind and seeing the full scope of wonders you can find. If you’re looking for a specific item my recommendation is always to call the store and ask if they have it!
Resource Exchange is open Wednesday- Saturday 10 am - 6pm and Sunday’s from 12-4 pm. Not to brag but I’ve found some exciting treasures there over the past three years. The crown jewel being a Brother flat bed home knitting machine (iykyk)! I’ve also found sewing notions, sewing patterns, cheap fabric, a bedazzler and a bag of feathery acrylic yarn to name a few finds. I often recommend this spot to customers looking for fabrics, stuffing, paints or basic knitting needles. I would also recommend this place to art teachers, workshop organizers, folks new to the area and anyone with a creative spirit and eco conscious art practice. Be sure to check out their website for upcoming events and volunteering opportunities.
